Care Approach and Populations Served
Twenty percent of Canadians experience poor mental health in their lifetime and meet the criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder; and one in ten people experience challenges with substance use. Sadly, the number of people requiring help exceeds the number of psychiatrists in the province. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners are an appropriate and highly sought after alternative as they possess the education, knowledge, and skillset in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric conditions. Nurse practitioners are able to fill gaps in mental health service delivery of alleviating long wait times or limited short term follow up structures due to a lack of care providers. Nurse practitioners in Ontario are able to provide all psychiatric treatments including counseling, psychotherapy, and medication.
I specialize in mood and depressive disorders including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder. I can support people with chronic pain treatments and have knowledge on the complex relationship of chronic pain, depression/anxiety, and substance use. My addictions experience includes working with community outreach harm reduction, withdrawal management, and hospital-based settings in front-line and management roles; using harm reduction and abstinence-based philosophies. Equally as important, I have experience and training in counselling loved ones of substance users in their quest to cope, find balance, and incorporate healthy boundaries. Counselling modalities utilized include cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, trauma specific and trauma informed practices.
I support people from all walks of life including diverse cultures, religions, and spiritual beliefs. I welcome and encourage people from the LGBTQIA2S+ communities in my positive space practice and work from an anti-oppressive framework guided by Rainbow Health Ontario training. I have received training courses in Indigenous Health from the University of Alberta, participated in Indigenous healing practices, and can incorporate traditional Indigenous healing methods into my practice.
